PREPARING A COMPETENCE BASED APPLICATION FORM
26TH JULY 2007
OUTLINE PROGRAMME
1. Introduction: Your Marketing Tool
“Tell me three things that you are good at?” Many people find this kind of question very difficult at an interview or during an appraisal. The concept of identifying and demonstrating evidence of skills is a crucial one, particularly preparing for competence based procedures.
While in local government and other public sector organisations you may not be required to submit a CV as part of the application process, it is likely that you will be asked to complete a competence based application form. As recent experience in health and social services restructuring demonstrated, this was a major challenge for individual applying for posts in the new post RPA organisations. They had not sat down in a long time to reflect on the competences they had acquired throughout their career. This meant they had difficulty providing good examples of how they demonstrated these competences in their work situation on the application form or in an interview.
Although the term 'curriculum vitae' literally means 'course of life', your CV is about much more. In addition to outlining your life and experiences to date, your CV is a resource which helps you match your competence and experience to demonstrate your suitability for the job in question.
An up-to-date competence based curriculum vitae is an important reference and resource for you. It takes time to prepare but it is well worth the effort as it will:-
a)Describe your core competences based on your career experience
b)Identify core competences which may be transferable to different jobs or sectors
c)Highlight gaps in your experience which enable you to plan beneficial development activities
d)Provide examples of your achievements for application forms and interviews
e)Increase your self-confidence and broaden your outlook about your future direction
