1          Introduction

The Local Government Staff Commission piloted the Developing Potential Career Planning workshop in 2006 and 2007 which has been positively evaluated by participants. The workshop is designed to help participants take stock of their experience, skills and personal style and think about possible career opportunities and direction for the future. It will complement other training events which focus on issues like preparing for selection and promotion interviews. The workshop is designed to be practical and interactive so that participants benefit from each others' experience and ideas as well as being guided by the facilitator, Anne McMurray see pen picture below.

2          Aims and Objectives

The aim is to enable participants to assess their personal strengths, values and life/career aspirations; set goals and develop an action plan to achieve this.

The objectives for the event are that participants will

  1. Develop an accurate self-assessment of their strengths, experience, values and aspirations as a starting point for future planning
  2. Identify their personal style preferences using the Myers Briggs personality profile
  3. Identify career and vocational areas which they may pursue in the future
  4. Set goals and develop an action plan to achieve these.
  5. Understand how to create a competence based personal profile search.

3          Logistics

The workshop is deigned for up to 20 participants, who should be of a similar level or grade.  Participants are asked to complete a number of assessment and preparation exercises before the event:

  • A skills self assessment which should be completed by self and at least one other peer
  • A trait self assessment competed by self and at least one other peer

Please complete the self assessment form attached to the confirmation email once booked.

Participants are also advised to bring a recent curriculum vitae if they have one which they will develop into a competence based profile during the workshop. This is a summary of the key areas of competence they have developed during their career and examples of how they have demonstrated these

During the workshop participants will work in pairs or triads as well as in the full group.

Each participant will receive a workbook which will contain pro-formas and guidance for each of the activities.  Participants will also receive further literature and references for follow up.  The workbook will be branded for the programme and sponsoring organisations.
