In the public sector the moral and business imperative to reflect the community which it serves is well recognised. It cannot hope to adequately serve the needs of 50% of the population if women are not represented at all levels of the organisation and in the political environment.
The events held under the theme of cultural change aim to make an impact on the culture of local government organisations.
The Employment Equality Plan provides the foundation for a workplace culture of equality and a workplace characterised by equality outcomes.
Employee Volunteering Challenge
The challenges, arranged in conjunction with Business in the Community, aim to build participants’ confidence and enhance team-working skills through working for a day on a community-based or environmental project.
Women in Challenging Careers
Essentially an outreach initiative to girls in schools at secondary level and in Belfast was organised as part of the Council’s ongoing Women in Non-Traditional Sectors project.
Women, Peace and Security
Participated in a cross-learning process on UNSCR 1325, sponsored by the Conflict Resolution Unit (CRU) of the Department of Foreign Affairs to bring together women from post/conflict situations to share lessons and successful models, and develop a unified message on UNSCR 1325 to deliver to the United Nations in 2010.
Surviving and Thriving at the Top
A series of networking sessions attended by over 80 senior women in local government and the wider public sector providing an opportunity to hear from inspirational leaders and network.
Encouraging Women into Political and Public Life
Hosted by the Secretary of State at Hillsborough Castle in November 2007 this event was open to politicians and community representatives. There were contributions from all the Political Champions.
